Celebrity Making News: Howard Stern
One of America’s most recognizable broadcasters is about to become a streaming personality in a much bigger way.
On August 31, SiriusXM announced that The Howard Stern Show will expand to HBO Max, turning Stern’s long-running live radio program into an adapted video series for streaming. Stern’s new SiriusXM season begins September 14, while the first HBO Max edition arrives September 17. New streaming episodes will then debut on Thursdays.

What’s Happening
The arrangement is more interesting than simply putting cameras inside a radio studio.
Stern will continue broadcasting his live show on Mondays through SiriusXM. As many as 40 cameras will capture the conversations, which will then be edited into a separate streamable version for HBO Max, along with occasional additional material.
The deal therefore creates two versions of the same celebrity-driven property: an immediate live audio experience for SiriusXM subscribers and a more polished visual edition designed for on-demand streaming audiences.
Stern has already had some history with HBO Max: his 2022 interview with Bruce Springsteen appeared on the service. The new agreement turns that occasional crossover into an ongoing distribution strategy.
Why This Matters for Streaming
The Stern deal illustrates an increasingly important idea in streaming: the next valuable franchise does not necessarily have to begin as a television show.
Podcasts, radio programs, YouTube personalities and other creator-led formats already come with something expensive scripted television has to build from scratch—an established audience.
For HBO Max, Stern provides a recognizable personality and a recurring interview format without requiring the economics of a conventional scripted series. For SiriusXM, HBO Max potentially introduces Stern to viewers who would never subscribe to satellite radio specifically to hear him.
And for Stern, it effectively turns a radio studio into a television production environment while allowing the core program to remain a SiriusXM property.
That makes this less a celebrity licensing deal than a useful example of media formats beginning to collapse into one another.
What It Means for Audiences
Existing Stern listeners will still get the live program through SiriusXM. Viewers who prefer streaming will instead be able to watch the adapted version through HBO Max beginning September 17.
It could also broaden the audience for Stern’s celebrity interviews. Recent guests cited by SiriusXM include Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Nikki Glaser, Kate Hudson, Taylor Sheridan, Sting and Eddie Vedder.
The experiment will be worth watching beyond Stern himself. If a personality-led audio show can successfully become appointment streaming television, other major podcasts and radio franchises suddenly become more interesting acquisition and licensing targets for streamers.
Also on the Celebrity Radar: Kelly Clarkson Closes One Door, Keeps Another Open
Kelly Clarkson also entered the entertainment headlines this week as The Kelly Clarkson Show ended its seven-year run on August 31 after more than 1,200 episodes. Clarkson is not disappearing from television, however: she remains connected to NBC’s The Voice. NBC says Season 30 premieres September 21, with episodes streaming the following day on Peacock.
For streaming audiences, Clarkson’s trajectory represents another version of the same broader shift: celebrity brands increasingly move between music, broadcast television, social video and streaming rather than belonging permanently to one medium.

Trend Takeaway
The celebrity itself is increasingly becoming the franchise.
Howard Stern moving from satellite radio into HBO Max and Kelly Clarkson moving between music, daytime television and The Voice demonstrate how entertainment companies can build programming around established personalities rather than asking audiences to discover an entirely new property.
For OTT platforms competing for attention, recognizable talent brings something particularly valuable: an audience that may follow the personality from one medium to another.
