September has opened with a revealing U.S. streaming mix: fresh releases are breaking through, but several of the strongest performers are titles that have already spent weeks—or even months—near the top. The biggest cross-platform story this week is Hulu’s Furious, which climbed to No. 1 on Reelgood’s U.S. streaming chart for August 27–September 2, while The Whisper Man, Lanterns, Reacher, Ted Lasso and Dark Matter all made the overall Top 10.
Platforms reviewed: Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV, Peacock and Paramount+. Platform-specific rankings below use the freshest U.S. charts available during collection, supplemented by this week’s Reelgood U.S. data.
Netflix — The Whisper Man / Death of the Pastor’s Wife
Trending Movie: The Whisper Man. The thriller entered Reelgood’s overall U.S. streaming chart at No. 2 this week and was No. 1 on Netflix’s September 2 U.S. movie ranking. It is also leading FlixPatrol’s September 4 worldwide Netflix movie chart, giving it both strong U.S. and international momentum.

Trending Show: Death of the Pastor’s Wife. The series remained No. 1 in Netflix’s latest available U.S. TV ranking, ahead of Beauty in Black and Outer Banks. Its rise also fits a broader Netflix pattern this summer: crime and true-crime-style storytelling continues to compete strongly with the platform’s larger scripted franchises.

Prime Video — The Last Sunrise / Reacher
Trending Movie: The Last Sunrise. The film led Prime Video’s latest U.S. movie chart, ahead of Icefall, Stolen Girl and Good Fortune. It was still among Prime Video’s strongest global movie performers on September 4, suggesting the title is sustaining momentum rather than experiencing only a launch-day spike.

Trending Show: Reacher. Reacher remains Prime Video’s biggest current series story. It held No. 1 in the latest U.S. platform ranking and also placed No. 5 across all streaming titles in America on Reelgood’s weekly chart. Amazon is already extending that universe: the Reacher spinoff Neagley arrives September 16.

Disney+ — Yellow Mirror / Furious
Trending Movie: Yellow Mirror. The title led Disney+’s September 2 U.S. movie chart, ahead of LEGO Disney Princess: Magical Mayhem and several Avengers films. Its ability to sit above The Devil Wears Prada 2—which has itself enjoyed more than a month of chart activity—makes it Disney+’s clearest current movie signal.

Trending Show: Furious. Furious ranked No. 1 among Disney+ shows in the latest U.S. platform data. More importantly, its Hulu availability helped propel it to No. 1 across all U.S. streaming in Reelgood’s August 27–September 2 ranking.

Hulu — 9 to 5 / Furious
Trending Movie: 9 to 5. One of the week’s most interesting surprises is the return of the 1980 comedy starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. It jumped directly to No. 1 among Hulu movies and also reached No. 3 on Reelgood’s overall U.S. streaming chart.

Trending Show: Furious. This is the week’s biggest U.S. streaming winner. The show moved from No. 8 two weeks ago to No. 5 last week and now No. 1 overall, coinciding with its August 31 season finale and Hulu’s August 27 renewal for Season 2.

HBO Max — Normal / Lanterns
Trending Movie: Normal. The film led HBO Max’s latest available U.S. movie ranking after more than two weeks on the chart, ahead of Practical Magic, The Drama and several DC-related titles.

Trending Show: Lanterns. Lanterns continues to look like HBO Max’s late-summer breakout. It remained No. 1 in the latest U.S. HBO Max ranking and finished No. 4 across all U.S. streaming titles on Reelgood this week.
The interesting secondary effect is visible in HBO Max’s movie catalog: Green Lantern titles have reappeared in its Top 10, suggesting the new series may be stimulating discovery of older DC material.

Apple TV — The Dink / Ted Lasso
Trending Movie: The Dink. The movie continued to lead Apple TV’s latest available U.S. movie chart after 40 days, ahead of I, Robot and F1.
But that ranking is about to face a major challenger. Today, September 4, Apple releases Mayday, the new Cold War action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.

Trending Show: Ted Lasso. Ted Lasso remains No. 1 in Apple TV’s U.S. ranking, while Silo and Dark Matter follow. Apple is particularly strong in this week’s broader U.S. rankings: Ted Lasso, Dark Matter and Silo occupy three places in Reelgood’s national Top 10.

Peacock — The Super Mario Galaxy Movie / Love Island USA
Trending Movie: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The animated blockbuster remained Peacock’s No. 1 movie after 33 days in the chart, with its behind-the-scenes companion Next Level: Making The Super Mario Galaxy Movie also climbing into the Top 5. That is a useful example of a successful franchise title lifting related programming with it.

Trending Show: Love Island USA. Reality continues to define Peacock’s distinctive streaming profile. Love Island USA moved back to No. 1 in the latest U.S. chart, followed by Below Deck Mediterranean, Married at First Sight and The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip.
Peacock’s next significant scripted test comes September 9 when The Paper Season 2 arrives.

Paramount+ — Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender / Lioness
Trending Movie: Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. The franchise title is the strongest current movie signal: it leads Paramount+ in FlixPatrol’s September 4 chart, ahead of Top Gun: Maverick and The Last Stand of Ellen Cole.

Trending Show: Lioness. Lioness remains remarkably durable, holding the No. 1 Paramount+ position ahead of South Park, Yellowstone, SEAL Team and Criminal Minds on September 4.
Paramount+ also has an immediate movie wildcard: Scary Movie (2026) and its extended cut arrived September 3, giving the service a major new franchise release that could challenge the current leaders over the weekend.

Weekly Trend Takeaway
This week demonstrates three very different kinds of streaming momentum.
The first is the classic breakout: The Whisper Man is new to Reelgood’s national chart and already No. 2, while Lanterns remains one of HBO Max’s strongest recent launches.
The second is franchise endurance. Reacher, Ted Lasso, Lioness and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are not merely premiere-week curiosities—they continue to anchor their platforms weeks into their runs.
But the most fascinating story may be rediscovery. A 1980 movie, 9 to 5, is suddenly the No. 3 streaming title in America according to Reelgood. Meanwhile, the success of Lanterns appears to be pulling older Green Lantern movies back into HBO Max’s charts. Streaming increasingly gives entertainment something theatrical distribution rarely could: a second, third or even fourth cultural moment.
And another chart reset begins today. Apple’s Mayday premieres September 4, Paramount+ has just added Scary Movie, and the major platforms are beginning their fall release cycle.
Methodology note: Streaming services do not publish directly comparable real-time audience figures. OTTShows uses the freshest available U.S.-specific platform charts together with current weekly U.S. streaming rankings and official release information. Where September 4 U.S. platform charts had not yet populated at the 8:02 AM ET collection time, the latest verified U.S. chart was used rather than presenting worldwide rankings as U.S. viewing data.
