The U.S. streaming story this week is unusually clear: Apple TV has taken the national lead, while franchise familiarity is driving discovery almost everywhere else. Mayday debuted at No. 1 across U.S. streaming for September 3–9, Silo jumped to No. 2 as its third season closed, and Lanterns, The Whisper Man, Reacher and Ted Lasso all remained in the national Top 10.

Platforms reviewed: Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV, Peacock and Paramount+. Picks use the freshest U.S.-specific platform charts available at collection time plus Reelgood’s September 3–9 U.S. streaming ranking.

Netflix — The Whisper Man / Death of the Pastor’s Wife

Trending Movie: The Whisper Man. The psychological crime thriller remains Netflix’s strongest movie story. It held No. 1 in the latest available U.S. Netflix movie chart after 12 days and ranked No. 4 across all U.S. streaming this week. Netflix’s weekly viewing data also put it at No. 1 among English-language movies with 33.4 million views.

Trending Show: Death of the Pastor’s Wife. True crime continues to deliver for Netflix. The series returned to No. 1 in the latest U.S. TV chart and led Netflix’s English-language TV ranking with 13.9 million views.

Why they’re trending: Both titles tap into one of Netflix’s most dependable audience behaviors right now: dark mysteries, crime and true-crime storytelling that encourage binge viewing.

Prime Video — Mutiny / Reacher

Trending Movie: Mutiny. Mutiny entered the freshest available U.S. Amazon movie ranking directly at No. 1 on September 10, immediately overtaking longer-running digital favorites such as Backrooms and Obsession.

Trending Show: Reacher. Reacher remains Prime Video’s biggest streaming series. It ranked No. 6 across all U.S. streaming for September 3–9, while Prime Video’s current Top 10 also includes newer titles such as The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin and Sterling Point.

Why they’re trending: Prime Video is benefiting from both sides of the streaming equation—a brand-new movie capable of jumping immediately to No. 1 and a proven franchise in Reacher that continues to generate sustained weekly viewing.

Disney+ — The Mandalorian and Grogu / Chad Powers

Trending Movie: The Mandalorian and Grogu. The latest U.S. Disney+ movie chart puts the Star Wars title at No. 1, ahead of Coraline, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian and The Devil Wears Prada 2. It also remained No. 10 in Reelgood’s overall U.S. streaming chart after a full week of eligibility.

Trending Show: Chad Powers. Excluding the companion Mandalorian and Grogu podcast, Chad Powers is the strongest conventional series in Disney+’s latest U.S. chart, ranking ahead of Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel and former streaming leader Furious.

Why they’re trending: Disney’s ecosystem is showing the power of two very different brands—one of entertainment’s largest franchises and a newer comedy capable of breaking through alongside it.

Hulu — 9 to 5 / Furious

Trending Movie: 9 to 5. The classic comedy remains Hulu’s most notable recent movie breakout. It led Hulu’s movie ranking at the start of September and had also surged to No. 3 across U.S. streaming the previous week.

Trending Show: Furious. Furious remains Hulu’s defining recent series hit. After reaching No. 1 across all U.S. streaming around its season finale, it slipped to No. 9 this week—but staying in the national Top 10 after the finale is still a strong signal of audience interest.

Why they’re trending: Hulu illustrates the increasingly unpredictable lifespan of streaming titles. A new crime drama and a decades-old comedy can both become major viewing events when cultural attention, platform promotion and audience rediscovery converge.

HBO Max — Practical Magic / Lanterns

Trending Movie: Practical Magic. The 1998 film is enjoying a perfectly timed revival. It sits No. 3 in HBO Max’s September 10 U.S. ranking and reached No. 5 across all U.S. streaming this week as audiences revisit the original ahead of the theatrical arrival of Practical Magic 2.

The sequel starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman opens theatrically this week, giving the original movie a powerful cultural tailwind.

Trending Show: Lanterns. The DC drama remains No. 1 in HBO Max’s September 10 U.S. ranking and No. 3 across all U.S. streaming. Recent reporting also describes it as HBO’s third-biggest new-series debut, behind only House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.

Why they’re trending: HBO Max is benefiting from franchise cross-pollination: a theatrical sequel is reviving an older movie while a new DC series is driving sustained weekly engagement.

Apple TV — Mayday / Silo

Trending Movie: Mayday. This is the week’s biggest U.S. streaming story. The Cold War action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh debuted at No. 1 across all U.S. streaming in Reelgood’s September 3–9 ranking. It also led Apple TV’s latest available U.S. movie chart.

Trending Show: Silo. Silo surged from No. 9 to No. 2 nationally as its third season reached its finale. Apple TV actually captured both of the top two positions across American streaming this week.

Ted Lasso remains extremely strong as well, holding No. 1 in Apple TV’s September 10 Amazon Channels ranking and No. 7 nationally.

Why they’re trending: Apple is having the week’s strongest combination of a fresh movie launch and appointment-style television. Mayday created immediate discovery while Silo benefited from finale-driven urgency.

Peacock — Twilight / The Paper

Trending Movie: Twilight. Streaming nostalgia strikes again. Twilight holds No. 1 in Peacock’s September 10 U.S. movie ranking after eight days, ahead of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. New Moon and Breaking Dawn – Part 1 are also in Peacock’s Top 10, suggesting viewers are turning the arrival into a franchise binge.

Trending Show: The Paper. Reality television still dominates much of Peacock’s chart, with The Real Housewives of New York City currently No. 1, but The Paper is the standout scripted mover: it jumped five positions to No. 2 following the arrival of Season 2 on September 9.

Why they’re trending: Peacock is showing two powerful streaming behaviors simultaneously—nostalgic franchise bingeing and renewed interest generated by a fresh season.

Paramount+ — Scary Movie / Lioness

Trending Movie: Scary Movie. The comedy franchise has taken over Paramount+’s movie chart, sitting No. 1 in the latest direct U.S. ranking and No. 2 in Paramount+’s September 10 Amazon Channels ranking.

Trending Show: Lioness. Lioness continues its extraordinary run at No. 1. It had spent 182 days in Paramount+’s U.S. Top 10 by September 9 and remained No. 1 through Amazon Channels on September 10.

Why they’re trending: Paramount+ offers perhaps the week’s clearest contrast between fresh franchise discovery and extreme series durability: Scary Movie has quickly climbed the movie chart while Lioness refuses to relinquish the series lead.

Weekly Trend Takeaway

This week’s strongest theme is the power of the viewing occasion.

Mayday demonstrates the classic launch effect: a star-driven new movie arrives and immediately becomes America’s most interacted-with streaming title. Silo demonstrates the opposite end of the cycle—a season finale can suddenly accelerate an established show’s viewing and push it back toward the top.

Then there is franchise rediscovery. Practical Magic has re-entered the national conversation just as its sequel reaches theaters. Peacock viewers are not merely watching Twilight; several movies from the saga are charting simultaneously. Disney+ is seeing The Mandalorian and Grogu lift related Star Wars programming.

The larger lesson for streaming may be that newness alone is no longer the advantage. A premiere, finale, sequel, new season or cultural event can all turn a title into “something to watch tonight.”

And the fall streaming cycle is only beginning: Apple TV’s Slow Horses returns shortly, Prime Video’s Neagley arrives next week, and the major platforms are moving into their heavier fall release schedules.

Methodology note: Streamers do not publish directly comparable real-time U.S. audience figures. OTTShows uses the freshest available U.S.-specific platform charts, Reelgood’s U.S. interaction-based weekly ranking, official viewing data when available, and current release information. Because some September 11 daily charts had not populated by the 8:00 AM ET collection time, September 9–10 U.S. platform rankings were used where appropriate rather than substituting worldwide rankings.
