September 4, 2026 – From Theaters to Streaming: Dhamaal 4 Hits Netflix After ₹200-Crore-Plus Run, While DC, GDN and Korean Kanakaraju Get Their Second Shot

India’s first streaming Friday of September is unusually strong for post-theatrical movies. A major Hindi comedy hit, a ₹100-crore Tamil success, an R. Madhavan biopic and a Telugu horror-comedy all move from cinemas to home viewing today—making this a particularly good week to see how differently theatrical success can translate into OTT attention.

Platforms & Sources Reviewed

Today’s review covered Netflix India, Sun NXT and the wider current India OTT slate, alongside fresh reporting from The Economic Times, Times of India, The Indian Express, The Week, GQ India and current box-office tracking.

Main Highlights

Netflix — Dhamaal 4

The most commercially significant theater-to-streaming move today is Dhamaal 4.

The fourth installment of the comedy franchise, starring Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh and Jaaved Jaaferi, arrives on Netflix today after opening theatrically on July 10.

Its theatrical run was substantial. The Indian Express reported ₹194.11 crore worldwide by its third Saturday; it subsequently crossed ₹200 crore globally, with later public tracking putting the final total higher. Because box-office trackers differ, the safest conclusion is that Dhamaal 4 comfortably became a ₹200-crore-plus worldwide film.

What this could mean for OTT viewership: Comedy franchises can be especially durable on streaming because viewers do not necessarily need the urgency of a theatrical spectacle to enjoy them. Families can watch together, scenes can be revisited, and earlier installments can benefit from renewed discovery.

Netflix therefore inherits something valuable: a movie that has already demonstrated mass appeal rather than one whose audience still needs to be proven.

Sun NXT — DC

The most intriguing regional success moving online today may be Tamil film DC, starring filmmaker-turned-lead actor Lokesh Kanagaraj alongside Wamiqa Gabbi.

The film begins streaming on Sun NXT today following a highly successful theatrical run. The Week reports that it crossed approximately ₹101.82 crore worldwide against a reported ₹25 crore production budget.

What this could mean for OTT viewership: The economics make DC especially interesting. A film that reportedly earned roughly four times its production budget at the worldwide box office arrives on OTT with strong word-of-mouth already established.

Streaming can now expand that success beyond the Tamil theatrical audience—particularly among viewers discovering Lokesh Kanagaraj as an actor rather than only as the filmmaker behind major Tamil action movies.

Netflix — GDN

R. Madhavan’s biographical drama GDN, based on inventor and industrialist G.D. Naidu, also arrives on Netflix today after its August theatrical release. Netflix is making the movie available across multiple Indian languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada in addition to its original-language availability.

Its cinema story was much quieter. Times of India, citing Sacnilk, reported just ₹3.58 crore India net after five days, with the Tamil version contributing most of the business.

What this could mean for OTT viewership: GDN may actually be one of today’s most interesting streaming tests.

Biographical dramas about historical Indian figures can have strong curiosity value but limited theatrical urgency. Netflix removes much of that friction—and multilingual availability gives a story about a South Indian inventor the chance to reach a national audience.

This is precisely the kind of movie for which OTT performance may tell a very different story from box office performance.

Netflix — Korean Kanakaraju

Netflix also adds Telugu horror-comedy Korean Kanakaraju today, roughly four weeks after its August 7 theatrical release. The Varun Tej-led film mixes Telugu comedy, supernatural fantasy and Korean pop-culture elements.

Available tracking places its full India theatrical business at roughly ₹22 crore net, though box-office estimates vary by source.

What this could mean for OTT viewership: Its unusual genre combination could actually work to its advantage online. Horror-comedies tend to be highly clickable, while the Korea connection gives the movie a discovery hook among younger viewers familiar with K-dramas and Korean entertainment.

A relatively modest theatrical performer can therefore become a disproportionately successful streaming discovery.

Short Trend Takeaway

This Friday offers perhaps the clearest illustration yet of why OTTShows should track theater-to-streaming separately from ordinary new releases.

The four movies arrive online with completely different theatrical histories:

₹200-crore-plus franchise hit → Dhamaal 4
₹100-crore regional breakout → DC
modest theatrical biopic → GDN
mid-scale genre performer → Korean Kanakaraju

Yet today, the streaming platforms effectively reset the scoreboard.

A movie that sold ₹200 crore worth of cinema tickets does not automatically become the most-watched OTT title. Likewise, a film that struggled theatrically can suddenly reach millions of people once language, geography, ticket price and the decision to leave home disappear.

That makes this week’s larger question especially interesting:

Which movies simply continue their theatrical success on OTT—and which ones discover the audience they were always meant for only after reaching streaming?
