The U.S. streaming picture is changing quickly as late-August releases arrive. This week, theatrical movies are finding strong second lives online, major returning series are challenging newer originals, and HBO Max has a potentially significant new franchise hit in Lanterns.
Platforms reviewed: Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV, Peacock and Paramount+. U.S.-specific daily charts and supporting viewing/release data were also reviewed; the chart source used here tracks country-specific rankings across all eight services and refreshes them daily.
Netflix
Trending Movie: The Last House
The sci-fi survival thriller remains the strongest Netflix movie signal, topping the platform’s recent U.S. rankings. It was still No. 1 in Netflix’s U.S. movie Top 10 as of August 18, ahead of Arthur the King, Don’t Say Good Luck and The Dating App Killer.

Trending Show: My Life with the Walter Boys
The teen drama has been Netflix’s strongest recent series performer. Its third season helped propel it to the top of the platform chart, and industry viewing data cited this week put it at roughly 1.3 billion minutes viewed for August 7–13.

Prime Video
Trending Movie: Masters of the Universe
The theatrical-to-streaming story continues. Masters of the Universe leads Prime Video’s recent movie chart and also reached No. 1 overall in Nielsen’s streaming rankings during its first streaming week, generating about 1.17 billion viewing minutes. Its streaming performance is especially notable after a comparatively soft theatrical run.

Trending Show: Reacher
Sterling Point has been one of Prime Video’s breakout August originals—it peaked at No. 1 and generated more than 933 million minutes viewed during August 7–13—but the chart battle is shifting following the August 19 arrival of Reacher Season 4. That makes Reacher the series with the strongest fresh momentum heading into this weekend.

Disney+
Trending Movie: The Devil Wears Prada 2
The movie currently provides one of the clearest Disney ecosystem viewing signals and sits atop the recent Disney+ chart sample. The continued popularity of the Spider-Man trilogy immediately behind it also shows the importance of recognizable theatrical franchises to Disney+ viewing.

Trending Show: The Shards
FX’s The Shards has emerged as one of Disney’s important August streaming series and appears near the top of current Disney+/Hulu chart activity. Its presence alongside blockbuster movie franchises illustrates how the combined Disney streaming ecosystem is mixing prestige television with mass-market movie viewing.

Hulu
Trending Movie: The Devil Wears Prada 2
The sequel is also the strongest current Hulu movie signal, topping the recent U.S. chart sample. Its performance reinforces the advantage Disney now has in circulating high-profile entertainment across its increasingly integrated Hulu/Disney+ ecosystem.

Trending Show: The Shards
The FX drama remains one of Hulu’s biggest current scripted titles, while Project Runway is also attracting weekly attention as new episodes arrive.

HBO Max
Trending Movie: The Drama
The Drama has taken the lead in HBO Max’s recent U.S. streaming chart, moving ahead of titles including Mortal Kombat II.

Trending Show: Lanterns
This is arguably the week’s biggest new-series streaming story. Lanterns currently holds the No. 1 position on JustWatch’s U.S. daily TV chart, which measures audience activity including streaming-offer clicks, watchlist additions and titles marked as seen.
The DC series also reportedly attracted 9.3 million viewers in its first three days across HBO and HBO Max, giving the franchise a powerful opening signal.

Apple TV+
Trending Movie: The Dink
The Dink leads Apple’s recent U.S. streaming movie chart, ahead of F1 and The Instigators.

Trending Show: Ted Lasso
Ted Lasso remains Apple’s dominant series story following its return for Season 4. The show continues to rank near the top of Apple TV’s viewing activity even as Dark Matter returns for Season 2.

Peacock
Trending Movie: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
The animated franchise title leads Peacock’s recent U.S. rankings, demonstrating again how recognizable theatrical IP can immediately become a streaming anchor.

Trending Show: Married at First Sight
Reality remains central to Peacock’s streaming identity. Married at First Sight is the strongest recent show signal, with The Real Housewives of Orange County and The Valley reinforcing Peacock’s unusually strong reality-TV lineup.

Paramount+
Trending Movie: Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender
The animated franchise continues to lead Paramount+’s recent movie rankings, staying ahead of The Hangover.

Trending Show: Lioness
Lioness remains Paramount+’s strongest current series signal, ahead of durable library performers including South Park and Criminal Minds. Paramount+’s August lineup has made the Nicole Kidman–Zoe Saldaña CIA thriller one of the service’s marquee returning originals.

Weekly Trend Takeaway
Three trends stand out this week.
Franchise recognition remains enormously powerful. Masters of the Universe, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie all demonstrate how established theatrical brands can translate quickly into streaming discovery.
At the same time, returning series are fighting back against the endless stream of new originals. Reacher, Ted Lasso, My Life with the Walter Boys and Lioness are benefiting from audiences already invested in their characters and worlds.
But the title to watch next week is Lanterns. Its rapid rise to No. 1 in JustWatch’s U.S. daily TV chart, coupled with its reported 9.3-million-viewer opening, suggests HBO Max may have launched one of late summer’s biggest streaming hits.
Methodology note: Streamers do not publish directly comparable real-time audience data. OTTShows therefore uses fresh U.S.-specific platform rankings together with available viewing and release data to identify titles showing the strongest momentum rather than treating every service’s chart as the same measurement.
