This Thursday’s India streaming picture has a striking theme: Indian cinema is dominating Netflix’s movie chart, but the winners are coming from several languages and very different genres. Suriya’s Vishwanath & Sons has surged to No. 1 after moving from theaters to streaming, Dhamaal 4 remains close behind, R. Madhavan’s GDN is holding at No. 3, and Taapsee Pannu’s Gandhari has developed into something even bigger—a worldwide Netflix success.

Platforms & Sources Reviewed

Today’s review covered Netflix India, Prime Video India, JioHotstar, ZEE5 and current India OTT reporting, including Netflix’s latest September 7–13 viewing data and fresh September 16–17 entertainment-industry coverage.

Main Highlights

Netflix — Vishwanath & Sons Takes the No. 1 Spot

Vishwanath & Sons is now Netflix India’s leading movie.

The Suriya-led Tamil film ranked No. 1 on Netflix India for the September 7–13 viewing week, generating approximately 5.5 million views in only three days on the service.

That follows an unusually fast transition from theatrical success to streaming. The movie opened in cinemas August 14 and arrived on Netflix September 11. Within roughly 24 hours of its streaming release, it had already begun trending at No. 1.

The movie is available in Tamil as well as Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

Why it’s trending: This is the classic theatrical-to-OTT multiplier at work.

Suriya + successful theatrical run + multilingual Netflix distribution gives the movie several overlapping audiences: people rewatching it, viewers who skipped cinemas, fans outside Tamil Nadu and audiences discovering the film through Netflix recommendations.

The particularly important number is those 5.5 million views in three days.

A theatrical hit has quickly become a streaming hit too.

Netflix — Dhamaal 4 Remains a Major Streaming Performer

Dhamaal 4 ranks No. 2 in Netflix India’s latest weekly movie list, with approximately 2.9 million views.

The Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi and Riteish Deshmukh comedy had previously climbed to No. 1 following its September 4 Netflix arrival.

It has now been displaced by a newer release, but staying at No. 2 is arguably just as interesting.

Why it’s trending: Comedy franchises have unusually strong streaming characteristics.

They are easy to sample, family-friendly, rewatchable and do not depend heavily on a giant screen or theatrical spectacle.

That gives Dhamaal 4 the potential for a longer streaming tail even after the initial post-theatrical release spike fades.

Netflix — GDN Holds No. 3

R. Madhavan’s GDN is one of this month’s most interesting examples of OTT changing a movie’s trajectory.

The Tamil biographical drama sits at No. 3 on Netflix India, generating approximately 2.2 million views in the latest weekly ranking.

That is particularly notable because its theatrical performance was relatively modest.

Why it’s trending: A biopic about inventor and industrialist G.D. Naidu does not necessarily create the same theatrical urgency as a franchise comedy or action blockbuster.

Streaming changes that calculation.

The movie becomes something a subscriber can discover because of Madhavan, its historical subject, a recommendation tile—or simple curiosity.

GDN therefore continues to illustrate a recurring OTTShows theme:

Box-office performance and streaming potential are not the same measurement.

Netflix — Gandhari Is the Global Story

Gandhari ranks No. 4 in Netflix India’s latest chart, but its India position tells only part of the story.

The Taapsee Pannu-led thriller has become Netflix’s No. 1 non-English movie globally, recording approximately 9.6 million views during its second week.

That is up substantially from its first-week performance.

The film has also reached No. 1 in multiple countries and entered Netflix Top 10 lists across dozens of markets.

Why it’s trending: This is the most important movie-streaming story in India today.

A title can be moving downward on an India chart because newer local movies have arrived while simultaneously becoming more successful globally.

That demonstrates why streaming performance needs to be viewed on two levels:

Domestic ranking tells us what India is watching.

Global ranking tells us how far Indian content can travel.

And Gandhari is travelling.

Regional Cinema Owns Half of Netflix India’s Top Five

The remainder of Netflix’s leading positions reinforces another important trend.

Telugu horror-comedy Korean Kanakarajulu ranks No. 5, with approximately 1.2 million views.

The latest Top 10 also includes Pyaar Prema Kalyanam and Gatta Kusthi 2, meaning four Tamil movies appear in Netflix India’s current Top 10.

That makes today’s chart less a “Bollywood streaming” story than an Indian cinema streaming story.

Language barriers become considerably weaker once dubbing, subtitles and recommendation algorithms enter the equation.

Netflix India Movie Snapshot

For the September 7–13 weekly period, the leading movies are:

1. Vishwanath & Sons — approximately 5.5M views
2. Dhamaal 4 — approximately 2.9M
3. GDN — approximately 2.2M
4. Gandhari
5. Korean Kanakarajulu — approximately 1.2M

Also appearing in the Top 10 are Alpha, Newton’s Third Law, Cocktail 2, Pyaar Prema Kalyanam and Gatta Kusthi 2.

What’s Arriving Next

Tomorrow could begin reshuffling the chart again.

Netflix premieres Lust Stories 3 on September 18, bringing together filmmakers Vikramaditya Motwane, Kiran Rao, Shakun Batra and Vishal Bhardwaj for four new stories examining contemporary relationships, intimacy and desire.

Netflix also adds Telugu action movie Irumudi on September 18, including a Hindi version.

Those releases give Netflix another opportunity to test two very different Indian content strategies: a recognizable Hindi anthology franchise and regional action cinema distributed nationally.

Short Trend Takeaway

The most revealing thing about today’s chart is not which movie is No. 1.

It is how quickly No. 1 keeps changing.

Dhamaal 4 dominated immediately after its streaming debut.

Now Vishwanath & Sons has overtaken it.

Meanwhile Gandhari, which has slipped to fourth in India, is becoming an even bigger hit internationally.

That means OTT success increasingly has several lives:

Theatrical success.
Opening-week streaming discovery.
Long-tail domestic viewing.
International discovery.

A movie does not necessarily need to win all four.

And regional cinema’s strength in the current Top 10 demonstrates something else: streaming is gradually making the idea of a single “national-language movie market” less important.

The audience increasingly sees a movie first and a language second.

That may ultimately be one of OTT’s biggest changes to Indian cinema.
